Background
Hararghe Health Research (HHR) is a collaborative effort between Haramaya University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, focusing on improving maternal and child health outcomes through evidence-based research that supports programs and policy.
Current research activities include:
- Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS)
- Maternal Immunization (MI)
- Invasive Bacterial Disease (IBD)
- Pneumococcal and meningococcal surveillance
- EChiLiBRiST Clinical Trial
The selected candidate will contribute to the EChiLiBRiST clinical trial, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating L-Citrulline oral supplementation in febrile pediatric patients at high risk of adverse outcomes.
The role involves clinical management support, participant monitoring, data collection, and ensuring adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ethical standards.
Position Information
- Position: Clinical Research Assistant Coordinator (Clinical)
- Duty Station: Haramaya and Hiwot Fana Hospitals, Harar and Haramaya, Ethiopia
- Number of Positions: 1
- Reports To: Research Coordinator
- Salary: USD 370 per month
- Duration: One year with the possibility of extension
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Screen children for eligibility based on defined criteria
- Initiate and oversee informed consent procedures with parents/legal guardians
- Enroll eligible participants into the study
- Conduct thorough baseline and follow-up clinical evaluations
- Monitor participants for adverse outcomes and readmission
- Assess and report adverse events and serious adverse events according to protocol
- Ensure appropriate standard of care for all participants
- Oversee administration of study supplements to randomized participants
- Monitor tolerability outcomes
- Supervise collection of biological samples at specified time points
- Accurately record clinical information in Case Report Forms (CRFs)
- Ensure confidentiality and proper handling of patient data
- Ensure adherence to study procedures and follow-up schedules
Job Requirements
Education
- Medical Doctor (MD)
Experience
- Minimum required experience: 0 years
- Experience in general practice, particularly pediatrics, is desirable
- Experience in clinical research or clinical trials is a strong advantage
Certifications
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification (mandatory)
- Valid medical license (mandatory)
Skills
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in pediatrics
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interact sensitively with patients and families
- High attention to detail in data collection and documentation
- Ability to work effectively within a research team
- Proficiency in English and relevant local languages (e.g., Afan Oromo, Amharic)
Knowledge
- Familiarity with clinical trial processes
- Understanding of ethical guidelines in research

- Emergency Pediatric Outpatient Department (EPOPD)
- Pediatric wards
